what is a language exchange?

According to Wikipedia, a language exchange is a method of language learning based on mutual language participating by learning partners who are speakers of different languages.

This is usually done by two native speakers teach each other their native language.

What does a language exchange look like?

I would like to explain how we did the language exchange last time now.

14 people participated.

I created a breakout room and every got the opportunity to speak with someone one on one.

They would talk about their culture or their favourite anime and so on.

They would talk for about 30 minutes.

After that, I shuffled each group and they would talk to another person for 30 minutes.

I would like to hear their impressions.

I enjoyed speaking with “name” about Tokyo and baseball!

This is the fourth article of this series where I will talk about the class environment.

I teach Japanese for beginners in person.

Students will learn writing, speaking and grammar in this class.

Students will also learn how to introduce themselves as well as kosoado words etc.

Let’s learn Japanese kosoado words

Students will have learned names of countries, jobs and other new vocabulary we use for daily life.

Students will also learn how to read katakana.

How do I deliver classes?

First, I will give slideshow presentations to teach new vocabulary.

Then, students will practice new vocabulary by using flash cards.

Thirdly, I will teach Japanese grammar.

Fourth, students practice speaking using the new vocabulary or grammar learned.

In this way, students will learn vocabulary and grammar, and they will be able to practice speaking in Japanese.

I teach Japanese by direct method, which means teaching Japanese in Japanese.

Therefore, you will have many chances to speak and listen to Japanese.

This is the third article of the series where I will tell you about the class environment.

I currently have one in-person class and one online class for beginners.

What can you expect to learn if you join the general Japanese beginner course?

I’ll teach you basic Japanese vocabulary and phrases.

For example, you will learn how to count numbers and how to say the dates properly in Japanese.

You will learn hiragana and katakana, which is Japanese alphabet.

This is an example of a lesson.

We learned how to count in Japanese.

The way we count changes depending on the subject.

For example, when you count dogs, we say ○○hiki.

いぬが　2ひき　います。There are two dogs.

However, when we count books, we say ○○satsu.

ほんが 2さつ　あります。There are two books.

I also teach days and dates such as how you can say “this week”, “next week”, and “last week” in Japanese.

When you join our classes, you will acquire very common Japanese knowledge.

This is the second article for the series where I will tell you about the class environment.

　We started in person JLPT N4 classes in March, 2022.

I have one student who wants to take the exam in this fall.

　JLPT stands for Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

Someone who is level N4 is one is able to read and understand passages on familiar daily topics written in basic vocabulary and kanji, and listen and comprehend conversations encountered in daily life and generally follow their contents, provided that they are spoken slowly.

　I’m teaching N4 contents with two textbooks.

Mainly, I’m teaching grammar, but I also teach kanji, reading, and listening.

Last time, we learned ”することができる”, ”テけい”, ”ナイけい” and so on.

She practiced these grammar and she did very well.

Here is her comment.

I enjoyed having class with Yuto Sensei. The learning environment is comfortable, and the fact we are using almost all Japanese in class helped me to practice oral and listening skills a lot. We also get to discover different grammars and kanjis every class.
