When we explain your obligation, we use なければなりません。

What is obligation?

Obligation means something you must to do because of a law, rule, moral or promise.

Therefore, even if you don’t want to do something, you are obligated to do it.

For example, I have to return this book by this Monday.

They are obligated to return the book by this Monday.

How to use なければなりません

Conjugation

Vない＋なければなりません

かえす→かえさない→かえさ→かえさなければなりません

You have to know what ない form is, so please read this article first if you don’t know it.

Let’s see some examples,

はしる→はしらない→はしら→はしらなければなりません

もっている→もっていない→もってい→もっていなければなりません

Other expressions for なければなりません

You can also say ～なくてはならない or ～なくてはいけない

These are the same expressions, so you can use the easiest one for you.

I’ll have to wake up at 5 am.

5じに　おきなければなりません。

5じに　おきなくてはなりません。

5じに　おきなくてはいけません。
